How You Can Easily Personalize Your Elearning And Create Modern, Targeted Content

Personalization is a big buzzword in L&D, and so it should be. Target your learners with specific content and support to help them move from A to B, in their context. This way you’re not only being more efficient with their time, but you’re more likely to see results.

With smart analytics, you can then see how they’re doing, and re-target them to move up to the next level. Sensible? Absolutely. Simple? It is now, if you use Elucidat’s updated Links and Rules features.

That’s right, it’s time to ditch the sheep dip approach, and go for targeted training. And in a world of constant digital bombardment, content that is useful and relevant is more than welcome – it’s being cried out for. In fact, asking learners to wade through content to find what they need is no longer acceptable. (Was it ever?)

Using Elucidat’s Rules and Links features, you can now create fully personalized learning experiences based on role, experience, confidence, skill-level, or need. Depending on how one interacts with some selected content, such as a question, you simply serve up the relevant content – whether it’s a single page, a whole topic, or further questions to challenge their thinking.

5 quick ideas for personalizing learning in Elucidat

1. Build competence step-by-step: set up a challenge. If they score under par, provide targeted tips for them to brush up on and an example to watch. And if they do well, take them to the next challenge, micro-learning style.

2. Challenge misconceptions: provide some case-studies that divide opinions and capture learners’ views through polls. Serve up content that challenges their views, and ask them to re-think – a kind of stick or twist approach.

3. Diagnose and filter: create a series of questions that help diagnose learners’ needs/gaps/experience up-front. Serve up a tailor-made topic just for them, made from a selection of ready-made pages.

4. Track and tailor as they go: create a rule that applies to the questions you’ve sprinkled throughout the topic. If they fail to score a certain total, serve up extra explanations, examples, or further questions. The learners may not know it, but their ‘big brother’ is looking out for them!

5. Ask: ask learners to rate how ready they are to apply their new skills. Use Likert scales or similar measurements at the end of a topic. Point them to extra related content or specific calls to action based on how they reply.

Take inspiration: how we filter 15 topics down to 3

Onboarding is the classic sheep-dip of learning. Yet it doesn’t make sense, especially when you’re trying to inspire new hires and get them up to speed in their role.

We created a quick proof of concept to show how you can use questions to filter content, so learners only see the topics that apply to them.

How we did it: the structure

The module was set up with the following core structure:

  • 3 profiling questions
  • An Image Grid menu
  • 15 core learning topics

So how do we personalize the content to individual learners?

There are two ways you can build personalized learning journeys in Elucidat:

Links: these do what they say on the box. But you can apply them to anything on any page, and link to external content or another internal page (which you can otherwise hide).

Rules: these allow you to create a trigger that activates the next piece of content for the learner:

  • scores above or below 70%
  • selects a specific option
  • completes an activity

Rules are great for creating learning journeys that respond to how well a learner is doing and their speed at grasping new concepts.

This was created in under an hour using both Links and Rules. Here’s how we did it:

1. We added a Rule to the first page of each topic so it only shows if learners choose certain answer options on the question screens. Here we set up Rules for topic 2.

2. To make sure learners don’t see topics that are irrelevant to them, we hid the links to the topics from the menu page. Here’s how.

Some further reasons to personalize

  • We’re naturally needs-based: Not for nothing is Google the first port of call for workplace learning (and many other things). We have a need, we search for an answer, and we fix the problem.
  • We expect it: Targeted marketing and news feeds are a fact of daily life. We are recommended articles, products, jobs, and even friends, based on what we look for, how we interact with other content, and what our friends are doing. An inappropriate pop-up ad is now something we sneer at. We expect relevant content.
  • Learning IS personal: Everybody has their own individual needs, interests, and learning style. How well they learn is largely up to them. You need to help learners on their journey. Since workplace L&D is about improving performance, it seems only right we take into account an individual’s role, experience, context, and skill-level in order to help them perform at their best.
